Janata Hotel

Janata Hotel – 1971

Ever since it opened its doors to Malleswaram in 1971, Janata Hotel has been rewarded with staunch loyalists who will argue relentlessly about its merits. These include the Dosas and Vadas that proudly display just the right shade of crispy brown.  Its founder, H Seetharam used to run a canteen at the Linganamakki Dam till the reservoir was built and moved here thereafter. He evidently inherited more than just business secrets from his grandfather H Veerabhadra Upadye in Koteshwar, Udupi, because Janata is still extremely popular 40 years hence and constantly filled with dosa enthusiasts and hungry shoppers from the Malleshwaram Market next door.

BRAHMINS COFFEE BAR - 1965
Brahmins as it is known among locals has been around for ages. In fact Radhakrishna Adiga who runs the place now has been behind the counter ever since he grew taller than the counter. What hits you at Brahmins is the simplicity of their menu. Over the years restaurants have sprung up all around offering all kinds of alternatives. Brahmins has stuck to its traditional “5 item” offering.

The idly comes with watery chutney all over it. There is no sambar. The Kharabhath has just the right amount of “stickiness” (if that’s the term that can be used)… and for those of us who want to ignore diet restrictions there is benne (butter) that he will put on the idly’s for a small extra charge. Coffee is still served piping hot in a glass tumbler. You have to have Kharabhath and coffee together (makes a great combination).

For me Brahmins is a throwback to the old times, starting with when we were in high school, through college and of course the present. Only the prices have changed. Used to be 10 paisa for an idly in 1976… unlimited chutney of course.

Veena Store

Store Started in 1977 has morphed into a popular eatery much sought after for its soft melting in the mouth idles served with only chutney (5/=)in unlimited quantities, huge crisp vadas, spicy shevigae bath, uppit and kesari bath (sweetened uppittu). Kesari Bath, though very tasty had an overdose of ghee accounting for the rich taste. This place will give the real taste of Bangalore food specially for those who love south Indian food.

Menu:
This place also serves poha (North Indian  breakfast in south Indian style)...Which is pretty good!!

Vidhyarthi Bhavan is a very old pure vegetarian restaurant in Gandhi BazaarBasavanagudi, South Bangalore. It was founded in 1943 by Venkataramana Ural. This hotel is noted for its crispy, "Masale Dose", especially the "Sagu Masale Dose".

This restaurant has been garnering the admiration of its patrons ever since 1938. Their fan base consists of people of all age groups - from kids who love thekurum kurum (crispy) Vada to the elders who like the filter Kaapi. Their signature dish however, is their Masala Dosa. If the sight of the waiter carrying about 15 dosas at the same time didn't catch your attention, the ghee oozing out of your dosa onto your plate most certainly will. This crispy dosa - considered to be one of the best dosas in Bangalore - certainly lived up to my expectations. Although accompanied by a large helping of chutney, the sambar, which isn't offered with the dosa here, is sorely missed.
For breakfast, they also serve other items such as Idlis (with sambar and chutney), Khara bath (also called Upma in a few places ), Kesari bath (the only sweet dish offered by them) as well as Pooris. Among these, the Pooris which are served along with Sagu (vegetable stew with coconut gravy) are the pick of the bunch. In the evenings, the extremely popular Rava Vada, serves as an appetizer while the main course (dosa) arrives. Interestingly, I felt that Vidyarthi Bhavan's best dishes are their most indulgent ones. Despite its hype, I must say that I found the coffee to be very average and comparable to that found in the Darshinis and Sagars located in every nook and corner of Bangalore.
